Our Garments & Processes

Below are some of are common questions about processes

WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CARE FOR LILY & SPRUCE GARMENTS?

Our garments are made of high quality, organic cotton fleece fabric that maintains its softness best when washed on a delicate cycle and tumble dry low. Please be aware that over time prints can fade due to wash and wear (and we hope that they become such a staple for you that they do!)

HOW DOES LILY & SPRUCE CLOTHING FIT?

Our garments are designed for long-term wearability. Our raglan tops are designed to fit slightly oversized, while the joggers have a more slim fit for style and comfort.

I PURCHASED TWO DIFFERENT GARMENTS IN THE SAME SIZE. WHY DOES THERE SEEM TO BE A SLIGHT SIZE VARIATION BETWEEN THE TWO?

We use a PNW small batch manufacturer to cut and sew all of our garments. This means our products are all sewn by hand and slight variations may occur. If there are any problems with your order, please contact us at customercare@lilyandspruce.com

WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR FABRIC?

Our baby playwear is made of our exclusive lightweight organic cotton fleece fabric. As moms, we hand-selected this fabric because of its soft and lightweight characteristics, giving it unique stretch and breathability perfect for babies on the move. As mothers who are all too accustomed trying to “keep up” with our babies all day long, we knew it was crucial to find a fabric that was soft on the inside for baby’s delicate skin while also lightweight so that it doesn’t make active baby too warm when they are doing the things that babies do best - crawling, walking, dancing or climbing!

We also believe that where you source your fabric and how it's made is important. Our fabric is sustainably and ethically sourced from mills across the United States. The cotton is grown and cultivated without the use of harmful chemicals or pesticides.

WHAT ARE GROW WITH BABY™ GARMENTS?

Babies grow rapidly, and it’s not uncommon to only get a handful of wears out of your favorite pieces before they’re no longer comfortable for your little one to wear. We have extended the lifespan of our garments by creating them with ultra-stretchy organic cotton fleece and our signature, flexible waistbands and necklines.

WHAT MAKES LILY & SPRUCE GARMENTS DIFFERENT? TELL ME MORE ABOUT YOUR “EASY-ON, EASY OFF” BABY GARMENTS.

When Lily & Spruce Founder, Laura Soldano, first had her son in 2022, she was frustrated by the selection of baby garments available on the market. Why was it that the cutest outfits were often the hardest to put on? Not only that, but how frustrating was it that when she would purchase an outfit for her son only a few weeks would go by before he would soon outgrow it? The reality is that the garments available weren’t designed for the comfort of a growing baby, and as a result their ability to explore freely and comfortably suffered. As a mom, Laura knew the baby garment industry could do better. So, she set out on a mission to design the garments herself.

Lily & Spruce’s raglan sweatshirts and jogger pants are designed specifically to be “easy-on, easy-off,” and eliminate all fuss when it comes to outfit and diaper changes. Our garments prioritize lightweight softness and stretch in every way, beginning with neck-bands that effortlessly stretch to pull over baby’s growing head, as well as our elastic-free joggers designed to Grow with Baby™. So, save yourself the drama and tears–frustration-filled airport or back-of-the-car outfit & diaper changes can now be a thing of the past. All of our garments have been fully mom-tested and approved, and once you try them, we promise you will never look back.

WHERE ARE YOUR GARMENTS MANUFACTURED?

We are proud of our strong Pacific Northwest (PNW) roots and our garments are cut and sewn at a local manufacturing facility in Seattle, Washington. In alignment with our values, we believe it is important to invest in the well-being and prosperity of our local community where our garments are made. As such, we are partnered with a local manufacturing partner who ensures living wages are provided for those who sew our garments, supporting their families and livelihoods.

We are also committed to minimizing environmental harm in our production and manufacturing process. As such, our garments are made in a zero waste facility–meaning that any scrap fabrics that would otherwise go to waste are instead shredded and composted.

WHAT ABOUT YOUR DYEING PROCESS? IS THAT ORGANIC, TOO?

Yes, our dyeing process is 100% organic even down to the inks and dyes that are used to print our creative storybook designs. In today’s textile industry, there are so many harmful chemicals that are introduced into our children’s garments without us even knowing it. At Lily & Spruce, we are committed to ensuring our garments are organically made, so that each garment is gentle on baby’s skin without exposure to harmful pesticides or synthetic chemicals. In furtherance of this mission, we work with a local US fabric printer to ensure our printing process is fully organic with all inks and binders being certified GOTS organic.

WHAT CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS? HOW DO YOU COME UP WITH EACH COLLECTION?

At Lily & Spruce, our mission is to inspire imagination and creativity for children through our clothing. This is a mission that we live and breathe ourselves beginning with the artwork we develop for each collection. Each collection features original artwork hand-drawn by an independent artist and aims to share an inspirational story for children. For example, Our “Hedgehog, the Adventurer” collection is a story following a baby hedgehog’s first journey through forest floor all on his own–and through art–shares the importance of being curious, exploring and overcoming the initial fear of taking a chance.

Our process for developing each collection is a very collaborative one between ourselves and our artist. We first write a story and brainstorm with our artist potential animals, colorways, foliage to serve as the basis for the story. Each collection is designed to have complimentary colorways, designs and style so that any piece from the collection can be mixed-and-matched to create fun and unique outfit combinations (in other words, 3 outfits in a collection actually creates 9 potential outfits!)

WHAT MAKES YOUR GARMENTS ETHICALLY SOURCED & MANUFACTURED?

In today’s textile industry, human trafficking and abuse runs rampant. So many of the affordable brands many moms have come to know and love are tragically so “affordable” because of unfair or forced labor utilized at many offshores production facilities. More tragically, many of these brands are able to get their garments sewed so inexpensively because their manufacturers are exploiting cheap or free child labor.

When Lily & Spruce set out to create our first baby clothing brand, we explored many sourcing options. However, as we researched various manufacturers and garment producers, it quickly became apparent that in many cases it was not possible to validate whether the garments would be sewed using fair labor or free of child labor. As a mom herself, Lily & Spruce’s founder felt strongly that no benefit to the “bottom line” outweighed the need to ensure fair and living wage practices are offered to those who sew our garments.

As such, Lily & Spruce is proud to partner with a local manufacturing partner based in Seattle, Washington who pays living wages, supporting families and livelihoods of those who make Lily & Spruce garments.
